Brightspace Learning Environment

Assignments – Consolidate availability dates | Updated

This feature updates the assignment availability dates to be consistent with the new availability date model, which was previously added to Discussions. Instructors can now include availability dates in the Calendar and have greater control over the behavior of availability dates for their learners. As a result, instructors can:

  • Stop late submissions.

  • Let learners view assignment information and submissions after it ends.

  • Schedule the visibility of an assignment.

  • Allow learners to view an assignment while preventing them from attempting it.

  • Post the start and end of an assignment to the Calendar.

For more details about changes to Assignments, refer to: New Assignments Date Feature - Updated Date Availability, Visibility, and Access Options.

The Assignment list page for both instructors and learners now contain all activity dates and date settings, including:

  • Access restricted

  • Submission restricted

  • Hidden

Instructors can choose the default settings for availability dates for any new assignment. The settings are available on the Availability Date Defaults page, which can be found under Course Admin.

Figure: The Availability Date Defaults page, the Assignment page with activity dates and date settings.

Previously, most Brightspace tools restricted access to assignments outside of availability dates with a manually managed visibility toggle (except the New Content Experiences, which will continue to hide both access restricted and hidden assignments).

This feature implements the following PIE items: D6797, D8173, D8004 (partial), D7195, D4958, D7273, D4900, D4217, D3670, D3153, D2536, D1746, D1672 (partial), D1396, D3398.

  • To use the new availability date settings, the d2l.Tools.Dropbox.ConsistentDatesEnabled (OrgUnit) config variable must be set to ON.

Brightspace Administrative Tools and Configs – Additional control over message alerts now allows hiding of mail and instant messages from message alert | Updated

This feature introduces the new configuration variable d2l.Settings.Navbar.HideMessageAlerts to Brightspace, which allows administrators to either show or hide email message alerts and instant message alerts in the minibar. This can be done separately; for example, users can set the configuration variable to hide email alerts while still showing instant message alerts.

Previously, the configuration variable d2l.Settings.Navbar.HideAlertsForMessages was used to either show all message alerts or hide all message alerts. This configuration variable is removed as part of this release. Administrators who already have this configuration variable turned on will automatically have the replacement configuration variable set to disable both types of alerts to minimize impact.

Figure: An example of the Message Alerts area. Email alerts have been hidden while instant messages are still visible.

Technical Details

Impact:

  • Slight impact to administrators due to the change to the configuration variable governing hiding message alerts.

Availability:

  • This feature is available to all clients.

To enable:

  • This functionality is automatically enabled for all users.

Data Hub – Added columns to Brightspace Data Sets for Assignments | Updated

This release adds new columns to the Assignment Summary and Assignment Special Access Brightspace Data Sets. The following columns are now included in both data sets:

  • StartDateAvailabilityType: determines whether learners can view or access the assignment before its start date.

  • EndDateAvailabilityType: determines whether learners can view or access the assignment after its end date.

Regarding historical data, the new columns in Assignment Summary have a default value of 0 (meaning 'access restricted') for all assignments with availability dates created before December 2022. There is no historical data available for Assignment Special Access. Users who wish to identify the date type for special access dates can pull that data from the parent assignment.

The Learner Usage Advanced Data Set respects the new date settings on assignments when calculating the Content Required and Content Completed column values.

This also entails the removal of the unused d2l.Tools.IntelligentAgents.PreferredRunHour configuration variable.

LTI Migration – Enable or disable LTI Advantage migration using Auto Migrate Links toggle | Updated

A new Auto Migrate Links toggle is available on the LTI Deployment page which administrators can use to control which legacy LTI tool links automatically migrate to LTI Advantage. This allows administrators to have both legacy LTI and LTI Advantage links in the same course and to copy that course without migrating the legacy LTI links.

The toggle is OFF by default for new and existing deployments. This allows administrators to set up and fully test LTI Advantage tool deployments before migrating them. When an administrator switches the toggle to ON, legacy LTI tool links available to a course automatically attempt to migrate to LTI Advantage when the administrator copies that course using Import/Export/Copy Components (course copy migration) or clicks Migrate on the External Learning Tools page (button migration).

Previously, the only way to prevent a deployed LTI tool from being migrated was to not share the tool with any courses, or by disabling the deployment.

For more information about D2L's migration plan, refer to Brightspace Legacy LTI to LTI Advantage Migration Plan.

Figure: Auto Migrate Links toggle on the LTI Deployment page.

Technical Details

Rubrics – Removal of legacy Rubric assessment type for learning objectives associated with quizzes | Updated

When you create a new quiz that has an associated learning objective, the Assessment Type drop-down menu no longer includes the Rubrics assessment type. Using the quiz assessment in this manner previously caused an error because it is not a supported workflow. This change ensures that users creating quiz assessments with learning objectives can no longer mistakenly use that worklflow. The Numeric assessment type continues to function normally.
