The Substance Abuse & Addictions Counseling AA prepares individuals for careers in the addictions field. The program is designed to develop the student's skills to provide therapeutic services for people dealing with substance abuse, and with an emphasis on helping them maintain recovery and prevent relapse. Graduates will be prepared for entry into the drug and alcohol counseling profession. By pursuing this emphasis, students complete both a general Associate of Arts degree and the preparatory coursework required to become a licensed addictions counselor. It also allows for transfer to a variety of baccalaureate programs.

Students seeking federal financial aid (which includes grants and loans) must complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) which online at fafsa.ed.gov. As a result of completing a FAFSA, an applicant will receive a federal Student Aid Report (SAR) in the mail or online. An electronic version of the SAR is automatically sent to the schools listed on the FAFSA. To list Great Falls College MSU, use our school code: 009314.

Students applying for financial aid may also be required to provide proper federal income tax information, completed verification materials, and any other information requested by the Financial Aid Office. Students must apply for financial aid annually.

Assistance is available to prospective students applying for financial aid. In addition, financial aid counseling for new students is an integral part of the admissions and orientation process. Once enrolled, students may receive counseling and assistance as needed. Substance Abuse & Addictions Counseling Program Requirements

Continuing your education: Once students are LAC Candidates or fully licensed they can pursue further education to become dually licensed as Licensed Clinical Professional Counselors, Licensed Clinical Social Workers or Licensed Marriage and Family Therapists. This will require first earning a Bachelor’s Degree in psychology or social work and then a Master’s Degree in either Social Work, Psychology or Counseling. Before choosing a Master’s Degree program students should look at the requirements for licensure by the Montana Board of Behavioral Health to make sure that the course offerings in their Master’s program align with the state’s requirements.
